ACE FREHLEY IS STILL IN A GROOVE
Ace Frehley once told Rock'N'Roll Experience Magazine, “I’m an anomaly, I’m an un-schooled musician, I don't know how to read music, but I'm one of the most famous guitar players in the world, so go figure.”
This is a perfect microcosm of the man who is often referred to as “Space Ace” or “The Spaceman,” best known as the lead guitarist of one of the most successful rock bands of all time, Kiss. He has led an extraordinary life.
While his stints with his fellow painted-faced rockers might be over—1973-1982, then the ultra-successful comeback from 1996-2002, Paul Daniel Frehley is currently out on tour in support of his latest album, Originals Volume 1. And while it is easy to scoff at a member of a huge band going solo, don’t forget in 1978 when all four members of Kiss—Frehley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Paul Stanley—put out solo records, Frehley’s was the biggest, with a hit single in “New York Groove.”
The wild guitarist, whose axes sometimes smoke (literally) and sometimes feature spinning pyrotechnics, has been playing an array of solo stuff—“Rock Soldiers,” Kiss classics (“Detroit Rock City”) and covers (“Emerald”) by Thin Lizzy. There is something for everyone.
